Thinking Lab on Sustainable Growth
Sara Mamel is Project Manager for Energy Transition Foreign Policy at Stiftung Neue Verantwortung as part of a cooperation with the Federal Foreign Office. Prior to that Sara worked for an international communication agency where she was responsible for several awareness-raising campaigns for the European Commission. Sara studied political sciences in Hamburg and Brussels as well as European Studies at the European University Viadrina and the Sciences Po Strasbourg.
On 13-15 October 2017, #DialogueOnEurope contributors from eight European countries will meet in Rome for the third and last European Thinking Lab Summit. This three-day meeting will give them the opportunity to further discuss the four main topics of the project, namely Migration & Integration, Populism, Social Cohesion and Sustainable Growth, and to finalise their policy recommendations for European decision-makers through various work and exchange sessions. Tony Blair’s call to spirits to rise up from the deep to throw off Brexit was worthy of Owen Glendower’s faith in his magical powers. So too is the reply that Shakespeare gave Hotspur: ‘Why so can I or so can any man. But will they come when you do call for them?’ Blair’s cosmopolitan audience showed there are people in the City of London welcoming his call to remain in the European Union. The one-fits-all approach does not fit the current socioeconomic environment. It is imperative that we develop horizontal policies, in cooperation with all involved players, to tackle multiple problems effectively.
The political mainstream thinks that this crisis is conjunctural, not structural. But the trouble with austerity policies is, that they increase the crisis in a cumulative way. With austerity one can only enlarge the probability to maintain the crisis, not to rule out it. And politicians don’t solve this problem – they preserve it.
On 28 June 2016, the German Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, together with the German Federal Minister of State for Europe, Michael Roth, officially launched the DIALOGUE ON EUROPE-project at the Europasaal of the German Federal Foreign Office in Berlin. (more…)
The Thinking Lab on Sustainable Growth aims to provide guidance on the challenge of shaping economic growth in Europe in a more ecologic, inclusive and social way. The issue of Sustainability is not limited to the field of ecology, but has to be tackled within a cross-sectoral approach, incorporating topics such as energy policy, innovation and start-up policy, digitalisation, social security and national debt policy.
