After successful #EuropeanTownHall Meetings in AthensLisbonRome and Marseilles, the fifth and final Town Hall Meeting within the DIALOGUE ON EUROPE took place in Madrid on 16 June 2016. Once again, representatives from civil society, NGOs, local initiatives, startups, think tanks, the cultural sector and from the media gathered to discuss the most pressing challenges Spain and Europe are currently facing and exchanged ideas about how to work towards a strengthened and progressive Europe.

The first stops of our DIALOGUE ON EUROPE in Athens and Lisbon were now followed up by a Town Hall Meeting in Rome on 5 April 2016. Once again, we invited representatives from civil society, NGOs, local initiatives, startups, think tanks, the cultural sector and from the media to gather and discuss the most urgent challenges Italy and Europe have to face presently, such as the reduction of youth unemployment or the refugee crisis.

The first bilateral Town Hall Meeting of our DIALOGUE ON EUROPE which took place in Athens on 7 December 2015 was now followed up by a Town Hall Meeting in Lisbon on 7 March 2016. Again, we invited young representatives from Portugal’s civil society, NGOs, startups, the media, and think tanks to gather and discuss the most urgent challenges the country has to face presently, such as the reduction of youth unemployment or the demographic changes the European Union is undergoing.

On 7 December, the opening event of our project DIALOGUE ON EUROPE took place in Athens. Multipliers from Greek civil society came together to participate in workshops on common challenges in Europe, and to discuss these with Michael Roth, Minister of State for Europe at the German Federal Foreign Office. On 13-15 October 2017, DIALOGUE ON EUROPE contributors from eight European countries met in Rome for the third and last European Thinking Lab Summit. This three-day meeting gave them the opportunity to further discuss the four main topics of the project, namely Migration & IntegrationPopulismSocial Cohesion and Sustainable Growth, and to finalise their policy recommendations for European decision-makers through various work and exchange sessions. Therefore, the Dialogue on Europe brought together representatives of the young civil society with parliamentarians and experts from the UK and Germany. Among the guests were Thomas Oppermann, Gloria de Piero, Martin Roth, James Graham and Sonia Sodha. Together, they discussed the future of British-European relations.

One year after the first #EuropeanTownHall Meeting in Warsaw, the second bilateral Polish-German exchange was launched on 12 February 2018. On December 7th, representatives of academia, civil society and culture from Germany and Poland followed our invitation to discuss possible future scenarios for Europe. Open discussions fed directly into a lively conversation about the challenges of European integration and Polish-German relations with Michael Roth, German Minister of State for Europe.

Elina Makri is Journalist, Co-Founder and Media Project Manager of C.A.R.L. (Computer Assisted Reporting Laboratory) and the Youth Investigative Journalism Prize. Furthermore she moderated the #EuropeanTownHall Meeting in Athens. In addition Elina is engaged in numerous international networking and journalism platforms such as Oikomedia.comCabebabel.com and Dialoggers.eu. She has studied Law at the Université du Droit et de la Santé in Lille and European and International Law at the Université catholique de Louvain.
